Planning for Your Surgery

Your physician will schedule a surgical time and pre-operative visit before your surgery. The pre-operative visit is scheduled at your convenience but should be at least 24 hours before your surgery. Any tests ordered by your physician will be performed during this time. A registered nurse will instruct you on pre-surgery procedures and also your activities after surgery. Please ask questions any time during your surgical stay. Our goal is your good health!

After Your Surgery

Following surgery you will be in a recovery area where you will be monitored by a registered nurse and given pain medications as needed. Family members or friends will be allowed brief visits once you are awake and stable. If you are an Outpatient, you must have a responsible adult available to drive you home and stay with you on the day of surgery. Post-operative instructions will be discussed with you before your discharge. You will also be given a written copy to take home. Please follow the instructions carefully. If you are an Outpatient, we will telephone you the next working day to answer any questions you may have, as well as to make sure you are recuperating satisfactorily.

Kids are Special

We understand the concern and worry that families experience when they learn their child needs surgery. Here at DRMC, parents can rest assured that their child will receive the highest level of treatment available, by a team of qualified and compassionate nurses who are specially trained in pediatric care.

During the pre-operative visit, we offer parents suggestions on how to explain the surgical procedure to their child in a way that will help to comfort the child’s anxiety. On the day of surgery, we allow Moms and Dads to remain with their children as much as possible - right up until the last minute. Parents can then rejoin their child immediately after the surgery. Our surgical team’s professional and caring manner also helps to put families at ease.
